Southern district's crime rate has fallen 10% and Police measures to combat country park robberies are also proving effective, Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee says.
Speaking at the Southern District Fight Crime Committee meeting today, Mr Lee said the measures include enhanced intelligence and exchange of information.
"On the operational front, Police, the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department and the Civil Aid Service have adopted a high profile in deploying more officers to patrol black spots.
"Since last year, Police have provided indexed signage and more emergency telephones in country parks, so hikers can identify their whereabouts and obtain help as soon as possible," he said, adding country park safety tips have also been given through various promotional activities.
The district's overall crime rate has remained stable, with last year's crime rate down 10% on the previous year.
Mr Lee assured that Police will enhance enforcement against street gambling in housing estates. He also applauded the committee for its youth publicity programmes which have enabled young people to learn to build a harmonious school environment and community, increase self-confidence, be disciplined and positive, and drug- and crime-free.
