4 arrested, $6m in DVDs seized

*
Customs & Excise Department

Customs officers have arrested four people and seized 24,000 DVDs worth $6 million in two operations.

At 4pm yesterday, officers raided a pirated DVD packaging and storage centre in a Kwun Tong commercial unit and seized 230,000 pirated Japanese cartoon DVDs worth $5.75 million. Two men and two women, aged 28 to 43, were arrested.

Officers then seized about 10,000 pirated Japanese cartoon DVDs worth $250,000 from a consignment due for export to the US during a search in a logistics company in Sha Tin today.

It is believed the core members of the syndicate have been arrested. Under the Copyright Ordinance, anyone in possession of any infringing article for commercial purpose is liable to a $50,000 fine per infringing article and four years jail.
