Loan fraud policeman to stand trial

Police Chief Inspector Leung Sing-fai, 46, denied three counts of fraud involving $879,000 in loans from a licensed money lender, in Sha Tin Magistracy today.

Magistrate Michael Jenkins adjourned the case to March 2 for a pre-trial review, and the trial is scheduled for April 20.

Leung was granted cash bail of $10,000, ordered not to leave Hong Kong and to reside at his reported address.

Independent Commission Against Corruption enquiries allege Leung falsely represented to United Asia Finance that information provided on three loan applications dated August 10, 1999, March 9, 2001 and February 23, 2002 was true, accurate and complete.

Based on the false representations, the company was induced to grant Leung three personal loans totalling $879,000.
