Mainlander jailed for illegal work

Immigration Department

A Mainland driver has been jailed two months for taking up unapproved employment in Hong Kong. His employer has also been charged with hiring an illegal worker and the case has been adjourned to April for trial.

Xiao Jiuyang, 37, admitted at Sha Tin Magistrates' Court today a charge of breaching conditions of stay. He was intercepted by Immigration officers at a roadblock on December 13, driving a locally-registered articulated truck.

A former cross-boundary driver, Xiao arrived in Hong Kong on December 8 as a visitor.  He admitted that his prospective employer, a Hong Kong resident, had arranged for him to drive in Hong Kong while Mainland approval for him to work was still pending.
