Crime busters: Police Director of Operations Peter Yam presents the Good Citizen of the Year Award to Lo Wai-hing.

Forty-one people have been commended for helping Police fight crime, at the Good Citizen Award Presentation Ceremony today.

Lo Wai-hing won the Good Citizen of the Year Award and was given a plaque and $3,000 for her bravery and resourcefulness. She helped Police catch a knife-wielding man who attacked three children playing in a Hung Hom housing block on February 1.

Ms Lo saw the incident, rescued one of the youngsters and called Police. A man was arrested and charged with four counts of wounding. He was sent to Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre for a year.

Forty others were given Good Citizen Awards, receiving a certificate and $2,000. With their help, 40 culprits were arrested for wounding, robbery, indecent assault, theft, conspiracy to defraud and murder. Police Director of Operations Peter Yam commended the recipients for their courage and bravery and said they set good examples for other citizens.

A new television announcement was debuted today to launch the Fight Crime Publicity Campaign 2004-05 Phase II, the theme of which is "Help Police Fight Crime". Other publicity materials including posters and outdoor electronic media advertising will also be used to publicise the campaign's fight youth crime messages on computer hacking, student bullying and drug abuse.
