The Monetary Authority warns consumers to beware of an email purporting to be sent from Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation.
The email provides a hyperlink redirecting customers to a fraudulent website where they are asked to enter their bank account information.
The fraudulent website looks similar to the HSBC Personal Internet Banking logon webpage. The bank has clarified it has not sent these emails and has no connection with the bogus site.
The bank said it does not send emails asking customers for their passwords or to verify their account information online.
The case has been reported to Police. Anyone who has provided personal information to the website, or has conducted any transactions through it should contact the bank on 2748 3322 and Police at 2860 5012.
Consumers are reminded not to access Internet banking accounts through hyperlinks embedded in emails, Internet search engines or suspicious pop-up windows. Instead, they should access them by typing the website address in their browser address bar, or bookmark the genuine site. If in doubt, contact the bank.
