Talent admission scheme under review
*

The Mainland Talents & Professionals Admission Scheme is being reviewed, Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Stephen Lam says, to better meet the needs of Hong Kong's economy.

Mr Lam told legislators today the review will be completed in the second half of next year, and that about 82% of 5,568 applications for the scheme have been approved since it launched in July last year.

Among the approved applicants, 31.9% are doctoral degree holders, while master and bachelor degree holders account for 25.7% and 28.9%. Some 68% involve academic research and education, and 62.2% have a monthly salary of $20,000 or below. Only three earn $280,000 and above a month.

Mr Lam said so far 1,497 Mainland professionals and 270 dependants have been granted a 12-month limit of stay upon initial entry. Of them, 50 Mainland professionals and 10 dependants did not apply for an extension.

"On the basis of available statistics, we believe the scheme can better meet the needs of the Hong Kong economy than those schemes it replaced," he said, referring to the Admission of Talents and the Admission of Mainland Professionals Schemes.

"The Government will continue to collect data and closely monitor the scheme's effectiveness and impact on the economy, and will review the scheme from time to time as necessary. Information collection is already underway for the current phase of review, which is expected to be completed in the second half of next year."
