101 arrested in illegal work raids

One-hundred-and-one immigration offenders, including 86 illegal workers and four employers have been arrested in a joint Labour Department, Police and Immigration Department operation.

 

More than 60 workplaces, including the Cheung Sha Wan Wholesale Fish and Food Markets, restaurants, a hair salon, a factory and 23 residences were raided and more than 300 ID checks conducted.

 

Seventy-two men and 14 women, all Mainlanders, were arrested for breaching their conditions of stay, while two men and two women were arrested for employing them illegally.

 

Five Sri Lankans, one Bangledeshi and one Vietnamese were arrested for overstaying, while one Filipino domestic helper and one Pakistani were arrested for taking up unapproved employment and using a suspected false instrument respectively.

 

Two other Hong Kong residents of Bangledeshi and Vietnamese decent were arrested for aiding and abetting the overstayers.

 

The arrestees were aged 19 to 60. One was injured and hospitalised after jumping from his first floor interior decoration workplace in North Point when a labour inspector arrived.
