Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident involving two public light buses and a taxi at King's Road, North Point this morning, in which a 58-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were killed, and 18 others injured.
Shortly after 5.45am, two public light buses travelling west along King's Road in the second right lane and the rightmost lane reportedly jumped the red light on reaching the junction with Healthy Street East.
The one in the second right lane hit a taxi driven by a 52-year-old man travelling north along Healthy Street East. The taxi crashed into the railings in the middle of King's Road while the taxi bounced to the westbound left lane of King's Road.
At the same time, the public light bus on the rightmost lane steered right, sideturned to the left on the eastbound lanes of King's Road and rammed a traffic light pole and a lamp pole.
A 58-year-old man was certified dead at the scene while a 23-year-old woman was certified dead at 6.27am after she was rushed to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.
The three drivers and 15 passengers who were injured -- 13 men and 5 women aged 20 to 61 -- were sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Ruttonjee Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital for treatment.
The two male public light bus drivers, aged 30 and 24, were arrested for dangerous driving causing death and are being detained for enquiries.
Police appeal to anyone who might have witnessed the accident, including the passengers involved, to contact the investigating officers at 3106 8849 or 3106 8800.
