Email deception warning issued

Hong Kong Police

Police urge Internet users to beware of an email deception which claims the user has won a lucky draw and asks for money before the prize can be collected.

On June 26 a 38-year-old man received an email alleging he won a US$2.5 million jackpot. The victim called a Spanish phone number given in the email and was then diverted to a British number where he was confirmed to be the 'winner'.

He then called the Spanish number again and was asked to remit 7,050 euros in handling charges and insurance premiums. He did so, but no jackpot was received and he reported the case to Police on August 12.

Anyone victimised in a similar way should contact Police on 2828 7480.
