Ching Cheung Road improvements under study

Improvements are being considered for Ching Cheung Road, such as strengthening bridge barriers and banning heavy vehicles, Deputy Commissioner for Transport Lau Ka-keung says.

A container truck crashed onto a flyover on the road Tuesday, and its trailer tumbled over the railings. The driver was seriously hurt.

Speaking on a radio talkshow today, Mr Lau said the road section, with a 50kph speed limit, is not a blackspot. There are adequate warning signs and markings, and it is surfaced with anti-skid materials. The height of bridge parapets there were enhanced from 1.1m to 1.25m in 2001.

While initial investigations found the road section is safe, the Government will conduct an in-depth study to see if further improvements can be made. District councils will be consulted on the proposal to ban heavy vehicles.

Mr Lau said driving behaviour is a key element affecting highway safety, and urged drivers to adopt good driving practices.
