Safety officer: Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Peter Yam says the force will spare no effort in enhancing publicity on road safety awareness and taking enforcement action.
*

There were 7,310 traffic accidents in the first six months of the year, up 5.8% on the same period last year.

However, most were minor, with the number of fatal accidents and people killed in them falling 6.8% and 10.8%.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Peter Yam said the force will spare no effort in enhancing publicity on road safety awareness and taking enforcement action.

Police aim to inform all road users of the importance of smart driving and that road safety is everyone's responsibility.

Mr Yam said the Commissioner of Police has set road safety as one of the force's operational targets for the year.

"In addition to enhancing public awareness of road safety through seminars and on-street education, Police also organise campaigns for groups of people who are most vulnerable to accidents, to cultivate a new culture in safe driving," he said.
