Police attach great importance to arson case: S for S

*
Hong Kong Police

Police are concerned and will investigate an arson case in which posters inside a lawmaker's Tai Po office in Tai Wo Estate were damaged earlier today, Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee says.

Speaking to the media, Mr Lee said while Police respect an individual's freedom of expression, officers adopt zero tolerance towards anyone who resorts to intimidation or damaging others' property for any personal reason.

He said that in every election campaign, such as the last District Council election, there were cases of damage to property including posters being torn down.

"We do not encourage this kind of intimidation, but there were incidents where these cases tended to increase during election campaigns," Mr Lee said.

Police are following up the case and have contacted the lawmaker to assist in the investigation.

Police will safeguard public safety, property

Police have the determination and ability to safeguard the public's safety and their property, Mr Lee stressed.

The Tai Po District Crime Squad is looking into the case, and it is not appropriate to speculate at this stage.

In the meantime, Police will step up patrol of the area and have reminded frontline officers to remain vigilant.
