Customs officers have seized $1.45 million worth of suspected cannabis resin from an incoming passenger at Hong Kong International Airport.

At about 12.40pm on Friday, Customs officers stopped and searched a 30-year-old Nepalese woman, who had arrived from Katmandu. The officers, with the assistance of an ion scanner, found 9.1 kilograms of cannabis resin inside her luggage and the heels of her shoes.

She will later be charged with trafficking in dangerous drugs and will appear in Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, the maximum penalty for drug trafficking offences is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.

The Customs & Excise Department has seized 17.1 kilograms of cannabis resin at the airport so far this year. Last year, officers seized a total of 8.6 kilograms of cannabis resin.
