9 abode seekers arrested, repatriated
*
Immigration Department

Nine right of abode claimants who had no right to stay in Hong Kong were sent back to the Mainland yesterday after the Immigration Department raided flats with the support of the Police.

About 70 officers participated in the operation. They rounded up four men and five women who had lost their claims for right of abode and and repatriated them. They also picked up a girl, a minor, who had overstayed her visa. She was released on bail.

Since the grace period expired at the end of March 2002, about 3,400 claimants with no right to remain in Hong Kong have been repatriated to the Mainland. About 330 claimants are in hiding. The youngest is 19, the oldest 72.

Abode seekers asked to apply through legal channels

The Immigration Department appeals to claimants who lost their litigation to seriously consider returning to the Mainland voluntarily. Eligible people may apply through legal channels to settle or visit relatives in Hong Kong.

The Immigration Department and the Police warn they will continue to conduct operations to repatriate illegal immigrants and overstayers.
