A 56-year-old man convicted of control and custody of counterfeit currency notes was sentenced to 16 months' imprisonment by the District Court today.

In an operation mounted by Police in February last year, the man was arrested on suspicion of possessing 2,750 counterfeit US Federal Reserve Notes amounting to a face value of US$375 billion. Some fake US banknotes were also seized during the operation.

He was later charged, convicted and today sentenced.

Two other men, aged 58 and 61, who were also found in possession of US$375 billion in fake US Federal Reserve Notes in the same case were each jailed for 16 months on February 3.

Consumers are advised to be cautious when purchasing US Federal Reserve Notes and ensure the genuine one is printed by the intaglio process and its denomination will not exceed US$1 million.
