A 50-year-old man has been jailed for eight months for allowing an object to fall from a building in Wong Tai Sin.

Kowloon City Magistracy heard that at about 2pm on February 20 last year, a section of metal railing fell from the rooftop of a hospital under construction on Sha Tin Pass Road and struck an eight-year-old girl who died about a month later.

A 61-year-old worker was charged with allowing the object to fall while the 50-year-old contractor faced a charge of allowing the fall during building decoration under the Summary Offences Ordinance.

Both men were convicted and the court meted out the sentence for the 50-year-old today while sentencing for the 61-year-old was adjourned until April 6.

People, especially workers and contractors of the construction industry, are reminded to take measures to prevent objects from falling from height. People who fail to do so can bear criminal liability.
