Eleven reports of theft amounting to $640,000 have been received during the four-day HK International Jewellery Fair at the Convention & Exhibition Centre.

The fair ended today seeing 14 people arrested during its run.

Seven Mainlanders were arrested in four cases and the property stolen was valued at $30,000. In two of the cases, three Mainland men were prosecuted and found guilty of theft, each receiving sentences of up to 14 months jail.

Seven South Americans were also arrested.

Police said its operations during the fair were a success thanks to the suitable deployment of officers and the organiser's co-operation in strengthening security.

Thirty-three thefts have been reported at jewellery fairs from 2001 to 2003. Among these, 22 cases were related to jewellery, the remainder involving other items such as mobile phones.

The losses reported were $62 million, $3 million and $32.5 million in 2001, 2002 and 2003 respectively.
