A 22-year-old man has been arrested at Lo Wu after a Customs & Excise Department sniffer dog detected drugs in his possession.

Customs officers found 270 grams of suspected ketamine on the man, as he crossed the boundary control point from Shenzhen last night.

The drugs, worth about $87,900, were found inside his shoes and in a package he was carrying.

They were detected by Barney, a male labrador retriever who joined the Customs team in 2000.

The man will appear in Fanling Magistracy today to face a charge of trafficking in dangerous drugs. He faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.

Meanwhile, the department also appealed to travellers to be patient when going through customs checks at boundary crossings.
