New man at the top: Police Commissioner-designate Dick Lee meets the press. |
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Dick Lee has been confirmed as Commissioner-designate.
Mr Lee will take over from Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui who goes on pre-retirement leave on December 10 after 37 years of Police service.
Mr Lee, 53, has more than 30 years service in the force serving in a host of posts and earning many accolades for his work.
Commenting on the appointment, Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa said: "Mr Lee has served in the force for nearly 31 years and has a thorough understanding of the work of the Police. Over the years, Mr Lee has devoted himself to improving the efficiency and professionalism of the force. I am confident that he will effectively lead the Police in meeting the challenges ahead."
Mr Tung also hailed Mr Tsang's Police service.
"Since taking up the appointment as Commissioner in 2001, Mr Tsang has demonstrated excellent foresight and remarkable leadership. Under his command, the force has continued to serve as a first-class professional team, which has effectively safeguarded the law and order of our community. We sincerely wish Mr Tsang a happy retirement."
Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee said Mr Lee will lead the Police to new heights.
"I am fully confident that the force under Mr Lee's leadership will continue to provide excellent services to Hong Kong and to maintain Hong Kong as one of the safest cities in the world to live and to do business."

On taking up the post, Mr Lee said: "The job of commissioner is extremely demanding and stressful but I am confident that with the support of staff and the public we can continue to take the force forward and keep Hong Kong one of the safest cities in the world."
Mr Lee added that the force will continue its policy of being reasonable and fair and working within the rule of law in considering requests for public processions.
On the streamlining of Government departments, Mr Lee said the force will continue to consider the most effective ways of reducing manpower while ensuring Police services remain adequate and efficient. He said he will keep the public informed of any changes within the force.
Mr Tsang thanked Police officers and staff for all their hard work and support during his tenure, and said he was confident Mr Lee will lead the force in maintaining Hong Kong's law and order.
Meanwhile, Tang King-shing has been promoted to Deputy Commissioner to succeed Mr Lee.
