Commissioner of Customs & Excise Timothy Tong led a delegation to the 24th Customs Co-operation Conference in Seoul today.

The delegates explained to their Korean counterparts the implementation of CEPA and its impact on Hong Kong's position as an investment base for overseas trading partners.

Mr Tong and Korean Customs Commissioner Kim Yong Duk reviewed co-operation between the two jurisdictions, updated each other on respective trade facilitation initiatives, organisational changes and application of new technologies and equipment.

They also exchanged views on the progress of implementing the US Container Security Initiative Pilot Scheme, and efforts to curb infringement of intellectual property rights and smuggling of illicit drugs and sale of illicit cigarettes.

"Our joint efforts on the customs front have contributed significantly to our work programme on combating the smuggling of contraband and illicit trade practices. Our co-operation also aims to enhance our bilateral trade," Mr Tong said.

Before their return to Hong Kong tomorrow, the delegation will see the latest developments and infrastructure in Seoul, including its customs clearance facilities.
