Joint swoop nets 261 in Mong Kok

Police officers raided Mong Kok area commercial and shopping centres overnight, arresting 261 people and seizing obscene and pirated video computer discs.

 

The Police were working jointly with the Immigration Department, Customs & Exercise Department and the Television & Entertainment Licensing Authority. The operation ended at 2am.

 

Those arrested included 240 women and 21 men, whose ages ranged from 14 to 62. The charges including breach of conditions of stay, possession of obscene articles for the purpose of publication, possession of dutiable goods and copyright-related offences.

 

Police seized about 114,000 suspected obscene VCDs and 23,000 contraband cigarettes, worth a total of about $3.7 million.

 

The Police say they will conduct such operations regularly to curb triads' sources of income.
