Drivers with bad habits such as speeding or not wearing seatbelts, beware. The Police are launching a four-week crackdown to put an end to such offences which are known to cause traffic accidents.

Starting on Saturday, Operation Fossington will see stepped up enforcement action aimed in particular at dangerous or careless drivers.

There were 10,621 traffic accidents in which people were injured in the first nine months of 2003 - an 8.9% decrease compared with the same period a year ago. The main reasons for these accidents included:

* driving too fast for the conditions;

* following too close to vehicles in front; and

* negligence.

To ensure that Hong Kong roads are safe for everyone, Police officers will spare no effort in tracking down those who have no regard for other people's safety nor their own lives, especially those engaged in illegal road racing activities.
