Customs officers have seized about $30 million in unmanifested goods from an export consignment destined for Shekou.

Six Mainlanders and a local man are being detained for enquiries as investigations continue.

Acting on intelligence, officers intercepted and searched a river trade vessel off Lung Kwu Tan at about 8am yesterday. A large quantity of unmanifested goods were found inside four 20-foot containers, declared to be containing planks of wood.

The seized goods included plasma TVs, industrial bearings, computer parts, films and shark fins.

The goods were stored in well-constructed wooden boxes to evade customs checks.

Initial enquiries revealed that the consignment was shipped by a local company.

Under the Import & Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for exporting unmanifested cargo is a $2 million fine and seven years' jail. The vessel involved can also be confiscated.
