Customs Officers this morning seized cigarettes worth about $6 million from an incoming lorry at the Lok Ma Chau control point.

Shortly after midnight, officers stopped and searched an incoming truck which was supposed to be carrying 597 cartons of metal accessories. Instead, they found about 3.5 million cigarettes with a duty potential of about $3 million.

The truck's  41-year-old driver was arrested.

The Customs & Excise Department said it will use intelligence gathering and analysis to crack down on cross-boundary smuggling activities.

Under the Import & Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and seven years' imprisonment. The vehicle involved may also be forfeited.
