US Customs chief gets security update
*

US Customs & Border Protection Commissioner Robert Bonner today visited the Kwai Chung Customhouse for an update on the latest maritime security measures in Hong Kong.

Mr Bonner visited Permanent Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology Denise Yue and Commissioner of Customs & Excise Raymond Wong yesterday.

Accompanied by Senior Superintendent of Customs Ports & Maritime Command, Wong Ching-lim, Mr Bonner toured the Kwai Chung Customhouse. He was briefed on the implementation of the Container Security Initiative Pilot Scheme and the ports and maritime command.

Following the signing of the Declaration of Principles of the Container Security Initiative on September 23, last year, Hong Kong Customs and US Customs & Border Protection jointly launched the pilot scheme on May 12. After three months' co-operation, the two administrations have secured a close working relationship.

Mr Bonner was pleased to learn the scheme was running smoothly.

The Customs & Excise Department said that as the busiest container port in the world and the top exporter of containerised cargo to the US, Hong Kong could enhance the security of global maritime trading and ensure the smooth flow of US-bound cargo from Hong Kong through its participation in the scheme.
