The possibility of Hong Kong being subject to terrorist attacks remains low despite the outbreak of hostilities in Iraq, the Secretary for Security says, adding that the Government has stepped up security measures.

Iraq is 7,000 kilometres from Hong Kong, and we will not be directly affected by hostilities there, she added.

Meeting the press today, she reassured the public that Hong Kong has sufficient manpower and contingencies to handle any possible terrorist attacks.

The Police have strengthened patrols at key points while the Customs & Excise and Immigration departments are on high alert at control points.

Checks of suspicious cargo and people will also be stepped up.

At the airport, aviation security will be constantly reviewed and enhanced as and when necessary.

To better inform the public about its anti-terrorism measures, the Government has published a booklet Hong Kong - A Safe Harbour. It is available from district offices and on the Internet.

The booklet describes how to react in emergencies and outlines essential first-aid measures.
