Experts back ferry proposals
*

The Transport Advisory Committee has backed the Government's proposals on the review on ferry services for outlying islands and the provision of a traffic and incident management system in the Transport Department.

Speaking after the committee's meeting today, its chairman Teresa Cheng said members agreed with the Government's principles and concepts adopted in the course of the review and formulation of the proposals.

"We note the Government has been providing various measures to enable ferry operators to reduce operating costs and to sublet the piers to increase non-fare box revenue. In view of the characteristics and the chronic problems of outlying ferry services, the Government is of the view the existing measures are not enough to solve the chronic problems and there is a need to step up the measures," Ms Cheng said.

On the provision of a traffic and incident management system, she said the development of it can facilitate traffic and transport incident management and dissemination of real-time traffic information to the public.

"The system will be an important tool for incident management. It will make the process more effective and efficient thus bringing benefits to road users in general."
