The Electrical & Mechanical Services Department will enhance the monitoring of all liquefied-petroleum gas supply companies, testing fuel quality at 59 LPG stations weekly.

Speaking after a meeting with the five LPG suppliers this afternoon, Acting Director of Electrical & Mechanical Services Frank Chan said testing will be conducted randomly, starting with Tai Po LPG station and the Tsing Yi oil tank.

"The samples will be sent to different testing centres and the results will be uploaded to the department's website for public inspection," he said. "The five suppliers have also agreed to standardise cleaning and maintenance arrangements of their oil tanks."

The task force investigating the recent spate of taxi and minibus breakdowns will hold its first meeting tomorrow. Findings and results during the investigation will be released at different stages.

As at 4pm today, the 24-hour hotline (2333 3762) had received 62 breakdown reports. No problems were found in the Government's 220 LPG vehicles.

He called on drivers and vehicle owners to arrange for maintenance of the LPG fuel system in accordance with vehicle manufacturer's recommendation, such as cleaning of the vaporiser every 40,000km or four months.

Noting the LPG stock in Hong Kong is adequate, Mr Chan said five suppliers will maintain a stable and continuous supply for vehicular use.
