New route: Chief Executive Donald Tsang discusses transport links with Vice Premier Li Keqiang in Zhuhai.

Tolls will be kept as low as possible when the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge opens to maximise its patronisation and the project's economic benefits, Chief Executive Donald Tsang says.

Speaking at the launch of the bridge's construction in Zhuhai today, Mr Tsang said the three governments have agreed on management concepts and works standards, and will continue collaboration to ensure the bridge is completed as scheduled.

It will be one of the most technically complicated landmark projects in China's transport history. It is designed to last 120 years and the whole project will take six years to complete.

The 29.6km main bridge, with a 100kph speed limit, will be jointly constructed by the three jurisdictions to cut travel time to Hong Kong from Zhuhai to three hours, and from Macau to 20 minutes, greatly reducing transportation cost and time for goods and passengers.

"Through a more convenient traffic and transportation network, Hong Kong's financial, tourism, trade, logistics and professional services can be better radiated to the Pan-Pearl River Delta area to the west of the PRD," Mr Tsang said, adding it will also benefit the development of the six key industries in the city.

Also officiating at the ceremony, Vice Premier Li Keqiang said the bridge will increase links and promote economic co-operation between the three jurisdictions.

"It is of great significance to maintain long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macau, and enhance overall competitiveness in the region," Mr Li said.
