Contractor fined for lift failure
*
Electrical & Mechanical Services Department

Registered lift contractor ThyssenKrupp Elevator (HK) has been fined $5,000 at Sha Tin Magistracy for failing to conduct proper maintenance and repairs.

The case stems from a lift-falling incident at Shin Nga House, Fu Shin Estate, Tai Po, on October 25 last year. It was caused by a failure of the counterweight pulley bearing, which led to a dislodgement of all eight suspension ropes from the counterweight, and eventually the breakage of seven of the eight ropes.

The Electrical & Mechanical Services Department submitted its investigation findings to the Department of Justice for advice. The company was later summonsed and pleaded guilty to failing to maintain and repair the lift.
