Sai Kung highway upgrades under review

*
Transport Department

Upgrades for the New Hiram's Highway are being explored following the fatal traffic accident on May 1, the Transport Department says. Public transport drivers have been urged to reduce speed when entering the roundabout there while enforcement against speeding will be bolstered.

The department has set up a working group with the Highways Department and Police the day after the mishap to explore upgrades for the highway.

The working group will visit the site with lawmakers on May 6 and meet with Sai Kung District Councillors on May 8 to hear their views so that upgrades can be implemented as soon as possible. District councillors will also be consulted on local residents' request to relocate the bus stop at the roundabout so that appropriate arrangements can be worked out.

The accident underlines the importance of road safety vigilance, especially in boosting road users' safety awareness and educating them on the proper driving attitude.

The Government will continue its three-pronged approach to boost road safety through legislation and enforcement, publicity and education as well as upgrading of road infrastructure.
