Warning issued to unlicensed broadcasters

*
Office of the Telecommunications Authority

Citizens' Radio faces further legal action if it resumes broadcasting without a licence. The Office of the Telecommunications Authority issued the warning today after Citizens' Radio said it plans to go back on air April 20.

An appeal on the constitutionality ruling made by Eastern Magistracy will be heard September 10 to 12. Pending the Court of Appeal's decision, the office called on Citizen's Radio to respect the law and refrain from broadcasting.

The office has investigated the suspected unlicensed radio broadcast on January 10 and the Department of Justice is finalising its legal advice. Pending the outcome of the appeal, the office said it would be inappropriate for the Government to engage in public debate on whether the Telecommunications Ordinance will be amended on the basis of the constitutionality ruling.
