Airlines help ease Oasis' travel crunch

*

Government-coordinated emergency measures in response to Oasis Hong Kong Airlines' cessation of air services are operating smoothly, the Transport & Housing Bureau says.

The measures include extra flights, special one-way tickets with discounted fares and priority bookings for students returning to schools in the UK.

To date, Cathay Pacific Airways, British Airways, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Qantas Airways have come up with special arrangements.

Some airlines have re-routed existing passengers to free up more seats for the heavily loaded Hong Kong-London route. About 1,500 affected passengers have already made alternative arrangements.

The situation at the Hong Kong International Airport has remained calm since Oasis stopped operating. The Airport Authority and Oasis' ground-handling agent have extra staff at the Oasis counter to assist affected passengers. The process has been smooth and orderly.

Staff of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Offices in London and Toronto as well as the Immigration Department are helping Hong Kong residents in need in airports in London and Vancouver. So far there have been no cases requiring special assistance.

Provisional liquidators for Oasis have made arrangements to return all their crew staff in London and Vancouver to Hong Kong.

The bureau and related organisations will monitor the situation and the latest information will be available here. Hong Kong residents who are outside the city and need assistance may call (852) 1868.
