Sham Chung ecology to be preserved
*

The Town Planning Board plans to conserve areas of high ecological significance in Sham Chung and protect its rural character, unique landscape and cultural heritage.

At about 32 hectares Sham Chung is bounded by Sai Kung West Country Park in the south, east and north. To its west is Sham Chung Wan which is part of Three Fathoms Cove.

Under the approved development permission area plan 16.1 hectares is zoned conservation area to protect and retain the existing natural landscape, ecological or topographical features for conservation, educational and research purposes and to separate sensitive natural features like the country park from being affected by development.

About 2.6 hectares at the western end will be the coastal protection area, retaining the coastlines and the sensitive coastal environment which contains three species of mangroves. A green belt, occupying 2.7 hectares, is located at the northern, eastern and southwestern parts of the area.

About 8.3 hectares of low-lying flat land in the middle is reserved for agricultural use so as to retain fallow arable land for cultivation and other agricultural purposes, while about 2.6 hectares is intended for small house development by indigenous villagers.
