Taxi no-stopping exemption extended

*
Transport Department

The relaxation of peak-hour and 7am-7pm clearways on roads with speed limits less than 70 kilometers an hour for taxis will be extended for another 12 months up to January 31, 2009, the Transport Department says.

The scheme, first introduced in May 2003, has not caused any major traffic congestion nor obstruction on the whole, and enables taxis to offer point-to-point service to passengers. This prompted the department's decision to extend the exemption.

Taxi drivers must exercise self discipline and strictly observe the "pick up, drop-off and go" and "no waiting" rules. If there are violations of these rules or obstruction and inconvenience are caused to other road users, the relaxation may be terminated in whole or in part before the extended period expires.

The department and Police will monitor the traffic situation closely and take appropriate enforcements against taxi queues which pose serious traffic congestion or safety hazards at junctions and on busy roads.

Since the existing permits will expire after January 31, the department will set up counters for the issue of new permits at 13 designated LPG refilling stations January 23 to 25 during noon to 6 pm. Taxi owners and drivers must bring along and show their existing permits at the counters to obtain the new permits.

Permit-renewal services will also be available at the department's four licensing offices from January 23. Questions? Call 1823.
