Cross-boundary survey to be held
*
Planning Department

The Planning Department will survey cross-boundary passengers and drivers at 11 immigration control points from November 19 to December 2.

The survey will collect information about the characteristics of cross-boundary trips, as well as trip-makers' socio-economic profiles and travelling behaviour.

About 65,000 randomly selected respondents, including 15,000 drivers, will be invited to complete the five-minute questionnaire.

The department said the data is essential for cross-boundary infrastructure and land-use planning when formulating long-term development options.

Traffic patterns

The department can also gauge cross-boundary traffic movement patterns with greater accuracy by examining the commuting characteristics of different cross-boundary vehicles.

The survey is the fifth of is kind and its results will be announced by the third quarter next year. The previous four surveys were conducted in 1999, 2001, 2003 and last year.

The 11 immigration control points under survey are at Hong Kong International Airport; Lo Wu Terminus; Hung Hom Station; the China, Macau and Tuen Mun Ferry Terminals; and the Lok Ma Chau, Man Kam To, Sha Tau Kok, Shenzhen Bay Control Point and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Points.
