Prosecutions against red light jumping rise
*

There were 56,064 red light jumping prosecutions in the first three quarters of the year, double the figure for the same period last year.

Secretary for Transport & Housing Eva Cheng today told lawmakers the rise was due to the substantial increase in the number of red-light cameras since the end of last year.

There are 96 cameras operating at 131 camera housings on a rotational basis. In July the Government sought Finance Committee approval for $86.34 million to implement phase three the Red Light Camera System. Upon completion of the project in 2010, the total number of cameras will rise from 96 to 155.

The Government will continue to monitor traffic accidents and prosecution trends, and examine whether and how to further expand the system in light of its overall effectiveness upon the completion of the expansion project in 2010.
