Self sustained: Chief Executive Donald Tsang chats with staff at a dessert shop that is a social enterprise providing job opportunities for middle-aged single mothers and unemployed youths with basic education.

A summit on social enterprises will be convened by year's-end as part of Hong Kong's drive to 'help people to help themselves', Chief Executive Donald Tsang says.

Visiting Yau Tsim Mong District today Mr Tsang said collaboration between the Government, business and society will promote social enterprise.

He visited a dessert shop in a mall above Olympic MTR Station run by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Jockey Club Tai Kok Tsui Integrated Services Centre. The shop is a social enterprise providing job opportunities for middle-aged single mothers and unemployed youths with basic education.

Noting social enterprises can boost employment in the district, Mr Tsang said he will invite non-profit-making organisations and the business community to participate in the projects.

He later toured Yau Ma Tei Police Station, now a Grade III historical building. He said: "In mapping out infrastructural plans the Government will strive to strike a balance between heritage conservation and development."
