Hong Kong leads the world in the provision of public Wi-Fi services with more than 5,000 Wi-Fi hotspots at 3,000 locations across the city, the Office of the Telecommunications Authority says.
The office regularly publishes statistics on the number of Wi-Fi hotspots and their locations on its website, and the latest figures show Hong Kong is now the world's most Wi-Fi city.
Unlike other cities where Wi-Fi services involve either public funding or co-ordination by governments, in Hong Kong it is entirely funded by the commercial sector.
To address growing concern about radio-frequency radiation safety the office checked radiation emitted by Wi-Fi hotspots from July to September. It uses the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection Guidelines and found radiation levels are far below recommended exposure limits.
The office today also published a set of security guidelines for Wi-Fi service operators, saying their successful implementation requires the awareness and participation of the users. The office will work with the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer and the industry to educate users on secure Wi-Fi services.
