Airport temporary taxi pick-up zone scrapped

Transport Department

The Transport Department will scrap the temporary taxi pick-up zone near carpark four at Hong Kong International Airport from noon on July 22. Dial-a-cab taxis will have to collect and drop passengers at carpark three or other taxi pick-up spots.

Speaking after a meeting with the taxi trade, Police, and the Airport Authority today, Commissioner for Transport Alan Wong said all parties agreed with the new arrangement.

More support facilities will be built at carpark three to facilitate passengers, including covering the carpark and erecting more signs.

Mr Wong said most of the taxi-trade representatives also agreed that the Airport Authority should continue to tackle the unlawful transport activities by restricting light goods vehicles and taxis from parking at carparks one, two and four.

Denying the Government was bowing to pressure from taxi drivers, Mr Wong pledged to crack down on drivers who offer discounts.

Secretary for Transport & Housing Eva Cheng welcomed the meeting's outcome, adding the arrangement will put in place a new order for the smooth operation of transport services for the public and visitors at the airport.

She also called for continuous exchanges of views and communication between transport-trade members and the authorities on matters of common concern.
