Liantang checkpoint under scrutiny

*

The Hong Kong-Shenzhen study on the proposed Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai checkpoint to explore its need, function and benefits will be completed in late-2007, Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee says.

A planning study on the relevant planning, environmental and engineering issues relating to the proposed new checkpoint and the connecting roads within Hong Kong will also be completed in early 2008.

Mr Lee told lawmakers today the local community welcomes the proposed cut of the frontier closed area coverage. To accelerate the opening up, the Government may reduce the coverage in phases. The technical feasibility and arrangements  for this are under scrutiny.

He noted a large part of the existing frontier closed area comprises hilly terrain, sites of high ecological and conservation value, traditional villages and burial grounds. This means developing satellite towns on the land to be released from the frontier closed area will involve complicated issues and require careful consideration.

Meanwhile, a survey on features with cultural heritage value in Sha Tau Kok, Ta Kwu Ling and Ma Tso Lung areas is underway to compile a thorough and comprehensive cultural-characteristics inventory.
