The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation has launched an investigation into the February 14 West Rail fire. More than 80 train transformers were checked overnight and found to be working normally.

KCRC Chairman Michael Tien said further checks will be conducted tonight, and he pledged to give a detailed report on the incident to the Government.

"The utmost concern for the time being is to ensure the effective and safe operation of the West Rail service, and to avoid a recurrence of similar cases," he said, expressing regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers in the incident.

The KCRC will offer free rides on February 21 from 9am to 1pm.

Experts from the transformer's Japanese manufacturer have flown to Hong Kong to inspect the faulty part that sparked the fire. The KCRC will establish the direction and schedule for the inquiry when the inspection is completed.
