Pier clock in good condition for reinstatement

*

The Star Ferry pier clock is in good condition and can be reinstated if technical and other conditions are met, Permanent Secretary for Housing, Planning & Lands (Planning & Lands) Rita Lau says.

She told legislators today the Government will consult the public on reinstating the clock. It will also research the design of the Central harbourfront, garnering feedback from the District Council, the Town Planning Board and other bodies.

Mrs Lau said the Government considers antiquity preservation in planning land use, by allowing public participation in the process. The Kai Tak development plan and Wan Chai harbourfront area are projects that have taken aboard public views, such as the use of open space.

During the meeting, Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Transport & Works (Works) Mak Chai-kwong said the whole Central reclamation plan, including the Star Ferry pier relocation, has been in consideration for almost 20 years with various public consultation measures taken. As there has been no resolution to keep the pier, it will be very difficult and time-consuming to revive the consultation on it.
