Chief Executive Donald Tsang says the Central and Wan Chai harbourfront plan will realise the people's vision of a vibrant, attractive and enjoyable public venue.

Mr Tsang today visited the Planning Department to inspect its work in land use planning and urban design. He received an update from Director of Planning Ava Ng on long-term goals and the progress of studies on co-operation between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta.

Sustainable planning

"The work of town planning is very important to the quality of the environment of local areas," Mr Tsang said.

"Through good planning, the city's development can be made sustainable and the environment more pleasant, as a world-class city should."

Mr Tsang toured the department's Information System & Land Supply Section, where he learned how the geographic information system and remote sensing is applied to mapping, and how computer-aided design and multi-media technologies help develop three-dimensional models. These advanced technologies aid the department's urban design work and make it easier to explain plan concepts to the public.

Future vision

Mr Tsang inspected models of the new Central harbourfront area and Wan Chai Development Phase II.

"The design of these areas will realise public visions of the future harbourfront. I expect that our harbourfront will turn into a vibrant, attractive and enjoyable public venue."

He said the Kai Tak planning and design framework, which has been well-received by the public, has reflected the district's unique characteristics. The area will become a new urban node blending environmental, sport and tourism themes.
