The transport sector's total receipts, including business receipts and other income, rose 11.2% in 2005 over a year earlier, to $418 billion, the Census & Statistics Department says.
The gross surplus of the whole transport sector - equal to total receipts less operating expenses and employees' compensation - fell 1.5%, to $48.8 billion. The gross surplus accounted for 11.7% of total receipts in 2005.
The value-added of the whole transport sector, a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, amounted to $104.2 billion in 2005, up 5.1%.
The four largest major industry groups in terms of value-added in 2005 were:
* air transport;
* land passenger transport;
* services incidental to transport, and
* ocean and coastal water transport.
Together, they accounted for 85.7% of the sector's total value-added.
