Border survey to launch next week

*
Planning Department

The Planning Department will commission a survey of passengers and drivers travelling between the Mainland and Hong Kong at nine immigration control points from November 20 to December 3.

The Cross-boundary Travel Survey 2006 will collect such information as characteristics of cross-boundary trips, as well as socio-economic profiles and travelling patterns.

About 56,000 randomly selected respondents - including 12,000 drivers - will be picked to complete a five-minute questionnaire.

Data for long-term planning

The department said the information gathered is essential for planning cross-boundary infrastructure and land-use when formulating long-term development options for the city.

The survey is the fourth of its kind and its result will be announced by mid-2007. Three similar surveys were conducted in 1999, 2001 and 2003.

The nine control points under survey are Hong Kong International Airport, Lo Wu Terminus, Hung Hom Station, China Ferry Terminal, Macau Ferry Terminal, Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal, Lok Ma Chau Control Point, Man Kam To Control Point and Sha Tau Kok Control Point.
