Caution issued on using Segway
*
Transport Department

The Transport Department cautions the public not to use the Segway HT on roads as its design and construction fail to comply with the law.

Segway is a mechanically propelled vehicle designed and constructed for carrying people and goods. This makes it a motor vehicle under the Road Traffic Ordinance, classified as a motorcycle. However, its design and construction fails to comply with the requirements of Road Traffic (Construction & Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations, the department cannot register or license the vehicle.

The use of an unregistered and/or unlicensed vehicle on roads, including private roads, in Hong Kong is an offence. Segway's importer and retailer may be liable to prosecution if they do not point out clearly to potential customers that the vehicle is not legally permitted for use on any road in Hong Kong.
