The Transport Department says it will not underestimate the seriousness of the problem of light goods vehicles suspected of illegally charging passengers rather than goods alone, adding it will work hard with the Police and the Airport Authority to prosecute offenders.

The department held a meeting with a group of taxi trade representatives today and listened to the views expressed on light goods vehicles' operation.

Efforts will be stepped up to publicise and educate the van operators and the passengers about the distinction between vans and taxis - and insurance implications, it said.
