Secretary for Housing, Planning & Lands Michael Suen says the proposed mandatory building inspection scheme and window safety enhancement options will improve living conditions to bring a new face to the city.

Addressing the Healthy Building Conference today, Mr Suen said he is confident the public will support the proposals outlined in the second-stage consultation on mandatory building inspection. They are based on the community consensus obtained in the first-stage public consultation.

"Building owners will also benefit from the likely increase in their property value and reduction in insurance premiums for their buildings. More than 7,500 jobs could be created annually for the relevant industries," he said.

Mr Suen said building safety is the Government's top priority. The Buildings Department has removed 124,000 building defects and unauthorised building works in the past three years and issued 5,000 statutory repair orders.
